The Drumsense Program

Build timing, coordination, and passion for drums with Drumsense.

This program was created in 1997 by professional drummer Colin Woolway to provide a clear, structured, and inspiring way for beginners to learn the drum kit. This program has been designed to give learners a consistent path, motivating play-along resources, and a solid foundation in drumming. Jonathon studied extensively with Colin in London in the early years of this programme. Jonathon also brought this program to New Zealand and has mentored many teachers in this method.

Colin Woolway - Drumsense - playing drums

Drumsense begins with a simple but powerful system of rock beats and hi-hat patterns that unlock dozens of coordination exercises. Students then work with play-along tracks that make practice fun and musical, helping them quickly understand:

  • Timing and keeping steady rhythm
  • Groove and feel across different styles
  • Coordination between hands and feet
  • Fills and rudiments that build technique
  • Stick control and dynamics for expression
